How Do Contact Lenses Improve Vision?

Understanding the eye

To understand how contact lenses work, you first need to understand a little about the eye. At its most basic, light reflects off an object and passes through the cornea, the transparent covering of the eye. Next it travels to the pupil, the black part of the eye, and then through the lens, which focuses the rays on the retina at the back of the eye.

The retina is filled with things called rods and cones and these take the light and convert it to electrical impulses which are then sent to the brain for processing. When you get blurred vision, this is due to something called ‘refractive errors’ and is when the shape of the eye stops the light reaching the retina directly and leads to distortion.

Fixing those errors

So to fix those errors, we use a tiny plastic lens that corrects them by creating a film that makes contact with the eye (hence – contact lenses). They work in the same way as glasses to focus the light on the retina and allow the eye to work properly. There are a number of different types of errors that leads to different problems and require different prescriptions to correct.

Myopia or near-sightedness is where object far away appear blurred while objects close by seem clear. This happened when the light entering the eye isn’t correctly focused and is caused by the shape of the eye. This is one of the most common conditions and there are various contact lenses that correct it.

Hyperopia or farsightedness is the opposite, where items close by are blurred but those further away are clear. Again, this is relatively common and there are lots of lenses to correct it.

Presbyopia is an age-related condition similar to hyperopia where items close by become blurry but comes from a different cause. While hyperopia comes from the shape of the eye, presbyopia comes from the eye lens hardening with age. To correct the condition, multifocal lenses are often used as they can clear both the near and the far blurriness.

Finally, astigmatism is a condition where the irregular shape of the cornea or the lens stops the eye from focusing the light on the retina. A special category of lens is used to correct this condition, called a toric contact lens. Often, an image of a ball can be used to visualise the different – a sphere lens is like a beach ball where a toric lens is more like a rugby ball. An example of lenses to correct this condition are the Biofinity Toric lens.

Tips to Protect Your Eyes

Tips to Protect Your EyesEyes are one of the most active muscles in our body and sometimes they are one of the most neglected ones too. Eyes work round the clock to provide us our vision and help our brain carry out its normal function. But when your eyes are unable to function properly, there are a lot of problems in our day to day life.

Today we share 10 tips to protect your eyes and keep them safe from any harm.

Tip 1 – Visit the Doctor Every Six Months:

We all hate going to the Doctor, but it’s essential that we keep visiting the eye specialist once every six months to keep the eyes safe. You might not understand that you have an underlying eye problem unless you get a thorough checkup. If you’re above 40 years, always get your eyes checked every six months to help detect eye problems related to advancing age.

Tip 2 – Never Dehydrate Yourself:

The human body is around eyes water so it’s also evident why our body needs water to function properly. Drink at least 8 glasses or 2 liters of water every day. Our blood is made up of water, our digestive system depends on water, our body uses water to flush out toxins from our bodies and our eyes stay hydrated with water. Tears keep it hydrated and when you drink less water eyes cannot create tears easily, resulting in dehydration.

Tip 3- If your eyes feel Strained after Reading, Maybe You Will Have To Wear Glasses:

Even though it’s not a sure sign, but finding it hard to read text for a long time may be a sign that you need to get your eyes checked. Also see your eye doctor if your eyes start to hurt when you work on the computer.

Tip 4 – Wear Eyeglasses as Instructed:

Many of us have been prescribed eyeglasses, but we feel too lazy or just try to ignore the fact that we need glasses. Our eyes are really fast and active organs and they constantly work to bridge any gaps or disruption in vision. This strains our eyes but gives us the impression that we don’t require glasses. But if eyeglasses are not worn in time, our prescription can get stronger. So if you’ve been prescribed a pair of spectacles make it a point to wear it.

Tip 5 – Wear Sunglasses When Outside:

Sunglasses should be a staple accessory in every person’s wardrobe. Not only are they really stylish, these help to protect eyes from sunburn, glares, UV damage and more. Wear sunglasses with UV 400 protection and which protects against UVA and UVB damages. Make it a point to wear sunglasses even when it’s cloudy, since the UV rays are still present in the atmosphere. Also wear sunglasses near water bodies and when you’re at high altitudes to avoid eye strains and glares.

Tip 6 – Wear Anti Glare lenses:

Always opt for anti glare lenses for your spectacles as these lenses can really give our eyes comfortable vision by eliminating glares and reflections. Light reflected off shiny or smooth surfaces and excessive light can damage your eyes and even give you temporary blindness. Avoid these and put less strain on your eyes with Anti Glare lenses from brands like Crizal.

Tip 7 – Switch to Contact Lenses:

Tired of wearing glasses all day? Want to go back to your Spectacle free look? Choose from a wide variety of Contact lenses made from breathable materials which are really comfortable to use. Choose between soft lenses or Gas permeable lenses and see clearly without depending on your glasses.

Tip 8 – Wear Photo chromatic lenses:

Photo chromatic lenses are specially treated lenses that change from clear lenses to tinted when worn in sunny conditions. The UV rays help the small film in the spectacle change color from colorless to light and sometimes dark brown, depending on the brand. Using photochromatic sunglasses is really beneficial for eyes since you don’t need to keep switching between eyeglasses and sunglasses. Also these spectacles block UV rays, keeping eyes safe.

Tip 9 – Eat Healthy Foods:

Our bodies extract the needed nutrition from our food, hence eating healthy is essential. Eyes need vitamins, minerals and other items to keep it healthy and working in good condition. So eat fruits and vegetables, consume good proteins and amino acids. You can also consult with your doctor about taking supplements for eye health.

Tip 10 – Don’t strain eyes With Computer/Digital Device usage:

We all love playing games on our tabs, work on our computers and stay glued to our mobile phones all day long! But these habits can cost us our vision! Our eyes get damaged with the use of digital devices that use blue-violet lights. So get your eyeglasses that can prevent your eyes from getting affected by these blue-violet lights. Reduce your digital device usage and every 20 minutes of computer usage stare at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, to keep your vision healthy.

Better Vision Eye Movement Exercises

The mind is never at rest, but it is constantly being fed thoughts. It attempts to find solutions to problems by working out the issues that we are concerned about. Therefore, it functions best when it is busy from the point of view of being in a positive and relaxed state. The opposite occurs when it is stressed and strained. In this case, it becomes overwhelmed and stuck in a state of stagnation. Such a state of mind leads to an accumulation of negative thoughts associated with worries, fears and anxiety. Consequently, unresolved issues begin to pile up. Likewise, when it comes to the eyes, they function more efficiently when our focus is not stuck on one particular object but moving around or shifting focus on different objects on a regular basis. In this particular state they are more relaxed taking in different sights in the scenery. This particular visual habit improves eyesight. However, when they are focused on one specific object for prolonged periods of time, they accumulate stress and strain.Such visual habits lead to worsening eyesight. Therefore, here is an example of a technique that keeps the eyes moving regularly for better eye health:

Scanning: What is scanning? Scanning is an eye exercise technique involving moving your eyes from the left to the right without moving your head. Here is a detailed description on how to perform this technique:

Sit comfortably in a chair and use your eyes to scan the environment in the room around you. Move your eyes from the left to the right. As you move your eyes across the room, scan various objects like a television, papers, clocks, windows, doors and walls etc. Remember that while you are performing this technique that you are keeping your eyes in constant motion without pausing or stopping to look at anything in particular. Such a technique removes stress and tension from the eye muscles and improves eyesight naturally.

You can also practice this technique outdoors to relax the eyes for better natural vision improvement. For instance, use your eyes to scan objects in your environment outdoors taking in everything from trees, to buildings, houses, cars, mountains and stop signs etc.

The eyes work best when they are busy, not fixated on one specific object for lengthy periods of time, but moving from one object to the next. When the eyes are fixated on a close up object for prolonged periods of time, it creates a buildup of stress and strain in the eye muscles. This accumulation of stress and strain in the visual system weakens the eyes’ natural focusing power. As a result, vision begins to deteriorate.

Our eyes are actually the busiest of the organs in our body. As a matter of fact, even when we are sleeping the eyes are still moving around in the REM Sleep State. Remember when you move your eyes concentrate on moving them in a natural and relaxed state and it is important to avoid jerky movements.

Teaching the eyes to move regularly is a healthy visual habit that relaxes the visual system and promotes better natural eye health. One way to accomplish this is to practice the scanning eye exercise. The opposite is true for visual habits that keep the eyes fixated on one particular object for prolonged periods of time. Such bad visual habits induce eye strain, stress and tension in the visual system causing vision to worsen. Therefore, in order to improve our eye health for better vision and to relieve eye strain, ultimately, it is essential to keep them in constant motion on a regular basis.

Exercise For Eyes

Exercise For EyesAs a consumer you want to have the assurance that solutions to your problems are simple, convenient and hassle free. After all, why pursue a solution that makes your life more complicated than it has to be? This applies to your eye health as well. This issue should be examined from both sides. Because sometimes there are allowances that need to be made. These are a positive means to an end when it comes to weaning yourself off of glasses.

This is an important aspect of an eye exercise program that is frequently overlooked. Paying attention to the correct protocol in terms of knowing how to wean yourself off of glasses, can significantly speed up the progress of your vision improvement program.

For example, in cases where you have a strong prescription, it is not recommended that you discontinue your glasses immediately. Doing this puts the eyes under stress and tension. This is caused by straining to see while you are waiting for your vision to improve. Get a weaker prescription that gives you 20/40 visual acuity that will still allow you to see clearly enough to drive.

Straining to see without glasses can actually slow down your progress. Here are some tips on how to use your glasses in conjunction with your eye exercise program. The key is to use your glasses as little as possible. Use them only when it is absolutely necessary to perform important tasks. By all means apply common sense.

For instance, if you need them for driving, use them for driving only. However, if you can perform a task without them don’t use them. For example,if your phone rings take them off. If you are going on a trip and you are not the driver at the wheel take them off. If you are watching t.v sit a little closer to the t.v set. Choose the closer seat at the movie theater if you are nearsighted. If on the other hand, you are farsighted make sure that your reading room has proper lighting.

This is because prolonged frequent and unnecessary use of glasses can weaken your eyesight. These tips may seem like a hassle but which would you prefer? Straining to see without glasses which slows down your vision improvement or making a relatively simple adjustment to wearing a weaker prescription that speeds up your vision improvement significantly?

Weaker prescriptions are necessary as they help you to wean yourself off of your glasses gradually until they are no longer needed. Why is this important? It’s important for 3 reasons: It makes it easier to perform all your daily activities hassle free.2A weaker prescription will significantly reduce the stress and tension in your eyes that is caused by straining to see.3 It will give your eyes just enough room to improve naturally on their own thereby speeding up your progress.

Taking these necessary steps will speed up the rate of your vision improvement progress. You will also significantly reduce the period of time it takes to see complete improvement and These are outcomes that are all favorable to your vision.

What Are the Benefits of Private Eye Surgery?

For those looking for specialist treatment for eye conditions – whether they are looking to have LASIK vision correction surgery or emergency retinal detachment surgery – there is the option to go public or private in many countries around the world. The choice all depends on a number of factors that the patient will have to consider.

Of course, fees will often come into play when deciding whether to go for private or public healthcare in this case. It is widely accepted that public health care is much more affordable, and therefore is often a popular option with many people. With that said, private eye surgery does have its own benefits that are well worth considering.

One of the first advantages of going for private eye surgery is that private hospitals are well known for offering an exceptional level of care. Many private hospitals and clinics will offer a standard of care that is higher than that in the public health care system, and this can be a significant factor in why people choose to go for private eye surgery.

For many, the attraction of private clinics and hospitals lies in the comfort and reassurance that you are receiving the highest quality of care possible. This can be reassuring and often provide people with a much more pleasant experience when they go for treatment compared to some public institutions. Of course, experience will vary from private hospital to private hospital.

The second advantage is that you will often have a choice of where you have the treatment done, which is often not the case when you are going in for public hospital eye surgery, especially in the case of urgent medical treatment such as retinal detachment surgery. In these instances, surgery is carried out where it is possible to do so on a short time scale.

This can be an issue for those who have certain standards or requirements in mind for the surgery. Those wanting emergency surgery such as retinal detachment surgery may have a particular doctor in mind, and for this reason choose to go private. Otherwise, they may find themselves having surgery in a public institution where they do not know who the surgeon is.

On top of quality and choice, one of the main reasons that people choose to have private eye surgery is that there is often no wait. Many different types of non urgent surgery may have quite long waiting lists in public healthcare systems, which may mean that people wait up to around three months or longer to receive the treatment they need – although this depends on the healthcare system.

For those who are looking for treatment on a rapid basis, going private can be an excellent option. In fact, many surgeries can be done on a very rapid basis for those who are willing to pay for it. Many private eye hospitals and surgeons will schedule their operations around your needs and requests. This can be very advantageous for those who do not wish to wait for their surgery.

The final benefit is that often you will get the opportunity to take advantage of the latest surgical tools and devices which are used in many different types of eye surgery. As private hospitals and clinics have a budget which can afford these latest devices, paying for private surgery often means you will get the benefit of these.

In some cases this can mean that there is a better outcome to surgery or more precise results, especially in instances such as laser eye surgery to correct vision problems. This can definitely be an important consideration for those who are very cautious about achieving the best results they possibly can when they go into surgery.

These are just a few of the main benefits of using a private eye surgery clinic rather than a public one. Although public healthcare is certainly adequate in a number of cases, there are several significant advantages to private care that should be considered if you require some kind of eye treatment.
